What is Enhanced Brain Injury Residential Support?


Enhanced Brain Injury Residential Support is a 24‑Hour service that includes a greater degree of supervision and therapeutic intervention for residents based on their dependency and severity of brain injury. Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Non‑Traumatic Brain Injuries (NTBI) may be eligible for this level of support.


Service Definitions

In-home intensive supports are available to support you in your private home if you need a great deal of supervision and support. Training, support and supervision are provided to help you with positioning, intensive medical needs, development and behaviors that would result in injury to you or other people.

Your ISP will include a plan for reducing the amount of in-home intensive supports needed. The need for in-home intensive supports is reviewed for reauthorization every 90 days.

Life skills training provides rehabilitation and skill building to allow you to develop and maintain skills, which support more independence. It includes:
  • Training in interpersonal skills and development and maintenance of personal relationships.
  • Skill building for community living such as shopping and personal banking.
  • Training with therapeutic exercises and supervision of self-administered medication.
  • Transportation to support training.

Provides training to your family and support network about your disability and strategies for support. Includes funding up to $1,000 for caregivers to attend conferences and classes that help them better support you.

Improves quality of life by developing or recovering skills and enhancing independence in everyday activities. Services are provided when Medicaid state plan limits are reached and aligned with NC TBI Waiver goals.

Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and mobility. Also includes light housekeeping if it's essential to your care.

Helps develop, maintain or restore mobility and physical function. Provided when Medicaid state plan services are exhausted and supports rehabilitation.

Training, assistance and supervision in licensed/unlicensed residential settings. Includes habilitation services, support with daily living activities, and transportation.

Coordinates medical, behavioral, social, and natural supports to address your needs. Also includes team collaboration, training and advocacy.

Short-term relief for caregivers or replacement of absent caregivers. Strengthens informal supports and reduces caregiver burden.

Professional training for families, caregivers and providers in specialty areas including behavior, speech, nutrition, assistive technology, and more.

Assesses and treats communication and swallowing disorders. Supports recovery or compensation for skills lost due to TBI.

Helps you choose, get, and maintain employment in inclusive settings. Includes training, job coaching, business startup help, and workplace supports.

Enables you to live in your own home with support. Services include assistance with daily activities, training, health monitoring, and transportation.

Devices and services to modify vehicles for safe transportation. Covers installation, repair, and training. Limited to $20,000 over the waiver duration.
